Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
Have they explored the possibility of a protein allergy like milk, not lactose but the actual protein? I have read that it often does not show up on allergy tests and can also cause resp. problems like asthma. Just a thought. Hope they figure it out so that he can get the asthma and other symptoms under control.

Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
What does the rash look like? I have heard of others allergic to Peanut get a rash. It can be hives but not always. I also read a lot of children with peanut allergies have asthma...There is always so much to figure out all the time!I know one of the symptoms of peanut allergy can also be diarrhea, but I don't know about the blood.... Hopefully that will be the only time that happens to him! Keep us posted & take care,

Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
Asthma, IBD and allergy go together, so it doesn't seem out of the question. Can't say why he would think peanut is more suspect than any other food though. My older son had a bad asthma test where you breath into the bag (can't remember the name of it). However, his test results were better once we got his CD under control, so I'm with you that these things are related! Wish you could find something better than the pred! Best, Ellen

Hi! It very well could be related to a peanut allergy. My neighbors little boy is very allergic to peanuts but does not get the respiratory distress as much as he does vomitting & diarreha. And I think she said that he did break out in a rash once. So it could be possible.Hope you find out what it is for sure. Take care . Virgie

Re: Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
the repiratory stuff is all asthma with my guy. the rash and other symptoms are the new mystery. it's just too weird to not be related somehow. he has 2 different rashes at the same time. his asthma is still crappy even on 50 mg of prednisolone (he only weighs 44 lbs). He also has NO traditional prednisone side effects. no moon face, no big appetite, no water retention?weight gain, no sleeplessness, no mood swings, etc.. unless all of these other things are manifestations of the drug. he had bloody poo over the weekend. he gets headaches and stomach aches randomly. it's just not fair to have to live like that. i'd feel better if we could at least pinpoint the real issue.
thanks for responding.

Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
I'm sorry for all of the problems you are having. I can only tell you that my daughter with CD has been tested several times for allergies, showing a positive reaction to 50+ items. Her allergy symtoms are all non-respiratory. She has nasal stuffiness, eczema, itching, and rashes, if we miss any meds. She did test mildly allergic to peanuts. The allergist said to keep consumption at around 2-3 tablespoons/week. We do stay away from it entirely when she is in a flare, so that we don't cause any additional inflammation. Hope you can get your little one fixed up.Good luck, Susan

thanks for the input...my guy was tested 3x for allergies and had no food related ones. the respiratory stuff is not allergy related. we just don't know what triggers him. our family is apparently just screwy when it comes to the immune system!

Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
I don't know anything about peanut allergies but seeing a pediatric allergist would be what I would do.
It sounds like he's on continuous prednisone? I've never heard of that for asthma. Sounds to me like he's steroid dependent if he's having problems every time you wean. It could also account for the blood in the stool. Our daughter (with crohns) had blood in her stools only during steroid use (pred and entocort). It does something to the colon, but I don't know what. She never has blood otherwise.
I have a nephew with bad asthma and now a daughter (non crohns) but the nephew is only to go on short bursts of pred (has had several bad flare-ups) and my daughter only needed 2 short weeks of bursts. (1 week each at different times). I don't think there's any food allergies in either case. It's pretty much autoimmune related in our case.
Might be worth seeing an allergist though, especially with the rash. Our allergist told us when Megan had a rash, that usually rashes like hers meant drug-related, not allergies, but I'm not so sure about that. Seems to me some with peanut allergies get huge welts and hives. She did all the tests for food allergies, plus latex, various types of oils, nuts, and cepholosporin, and tested negative. The allergist can test for multiple things.

Re: Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
I don't know a lot about food allergies or UC (but I am learning)
My son Alex was dx w/ UC last year. We had him tested for allergies and it turned out he was allergic to a lot of things (ped said he's allergic to life). Peanuts was #1 on the list. At the time, we were giving him pentassa mixed w/ peanut butter. I thought that could have caused the relapse he had but so far 3 ped gis said no. The gis seem to discount the allergy factor in any of this. The allergist suggested taking peanuts wheat and soy out of his diet. Since that is basically everything, we just took out peanuts (for now). Is it making a difference? Who knows because of everything else he is on. I have read that peanut allergies can manifest themselves in different ways (such as gastro as opposed to welts, etc)
Good luckCaryn (Alex 7, dx UC last year, imuran, tons of probiotics and weaning off prednidon

Re: Re: hey, question to all you moms who are so knowledgeable about food/allergies....
my guy has the worst asthma you can imagine. he has been allergy tested(more than once). the doc's thought was maybe he is developing new allergies. i think it's bunk. he takes so much prednisone becasue he doesn't metabolize it properly. i want an endocrine study done. it takes way too much to even affect him. he did the short bursts of pred. for a year and a half, then they stopped helping. i would definitely agree that he is prednisone dependent. i just don't know what to do about it. he has tried every treatment for asthma available. we have been seen regularly by an allergist and pulminologist as well as his pediatrician. they all talk to each other regularly about him, too. no one knows what to do. it just never ends.
the rash is freaking me out. we go back today to get some more tests done. he is weaning again, by the way.
thanks for your response.
