Re: Pentasta
My son was just a baby really so we put it in a 10ml oral syringe with ensure. This way it went right down and he did not chew any of them. He also would not eat anything else.

Re: Pentasta
We used chocolate icing. It had a stringer taste and was thicker so he did not know it was in there.

Re: Pentasta
My 12 year old can't even swallow those big pills, and his doctor said it was fine to break them up and put in applesauce. However, he isn't crazy about them mixed with applesauce so we have been mixing it in Jello. He calls it his "jellicine".Carla

Re: Pentasta
Yes, we used to open my daughters pentasa and put it in applesauce. We used to get three pills on one spoon of applesauce. We would put a coating of sauce in the bowl of the spoon, open the capsules and then cover it with a layer of more applesauce. We put the first layer of applesauce down to keep the little beads from rolling around on the spoon. We did this for quite a while and it worked great. Best of luck! Re: Pentasta
We used to do that for Joel. The GI said it was fine. Every doctor is different though, some don't think you should.Kim

Re: Re: Pentasta
Ours was one of the docs who was not into this. He said there hadn't been any studies of the safety or effectiveness of the pills opened, so wouldn't recommend pentasa for my son (then 2) until he could swallow pills, which was not until he was 5. I called the company directly, and this was also their position at that time (6 years back). Maybe they have more data now. I'm sure at least they have more experience doing things this way. All the best, Ellen

Re: Re: Re: Pentasta
I had a doctor and pharmacist who both said opening the capsules and taking the contents of the capsule with applesauce was ok as long as I didn't chew any of the beads - apparently, the beads are individually enteric coated (unlike Asacol, which cannot be opened). The company who makes Pentasa sells the granules by themselves in a sachet elsewhere in the world, just not here in the US. Re: Re: Pentasta
Hi Kim...ditto for us. Applesauce was the way to go until one day, finally, Casey was able to swallow pills.
Good luck!
